If you want to find out where to travel abroad and feel welcome for your LGBTQ+ destination wedding, you’ve come to the right place! As a travel specialist, I think destination weddings are where it’s at—and everyone should consider one! Not only will you save money, but you’ll be surrounded by incredible natural beauty. It’s a win-win! However, I know that for LGBTQ+ couples, it isn’t always so simple. Sadly, contending with legal barriers and safety concerns is still a reality in 2023, and these factors can make it frustrating and confusing to figure out where to tie the knot.
Fortunately, there’s good news if you and your partner have been dreaming of a destination wedding: LGBTQ+-friendly locations in Mexico and the Caribbean will welcome you with open arms! Today I’m here to share three of those locations. Plus, I’ll recommend my favorite all-inclusive resorts for hosting your special day! All love is welcome at Bridie Travel, and when you work with me to book your destination wedding, I’ll prioritize your comfort and safety every step of the way.
Top LGBTQ+ Destination Wedding Locations
Costa Rica
Unfortunately, Costa Rica has yet to legalize same-sex marriage. However, the country’s social climate has shifted dramatically in recent years. LGBTQ+ couples who visit report feeling welcomed and safe! In addition, LGBTQ+-friendly tour companies have started popping up in the area, openly inviting couples of all sexual orientations to come and enjoy the stunning scenery.
Resort Recommendation
Secrets Papayago is an adults-only resort tucked away on a black sand beach, with bungalow-style rooms scattered over the sea cliffs to provide privacy and an air of romance.
The Bottom Line
Since Costa Rica does not recognize same-sex marriages or civil unions, couples who wed here will have a symbolic ceremony. However, the friendly social climate and breathtaking beauty here make it an option well worth considering!
Curaçao
In December 2022, Curaçao established marriage rights for same-sex couples. While these couples still cannot legally marry within the country, it’s a step in the right direction! In recent years, Curaçao has also established a reputation as one of the most LGBTQ+-friendly destinations in the world. The island is well-known for welcoming tourists from all walks of life, and the couples I send there always return with fond memories of the locals.
Resort Recommendation
Sandals Curaçao is brand-new, so you know you’re investing in a premium experience! It’s also adults-only and offers all-inclusive wedding and elopement packages.
The Bottom Line
Curaçao doesn’t perform state-sanctioned same-sex unions, although it does recognize marriage rights for these couples. Those who wed here will have a symbolic ceremony.
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
There’s a reason Puerto Vallarta has been nicknamed the “San Francisco of Mexico”! It’s well known as one of the most welcoming destinations for same-sex couples. LGBTQ+ culture is thriving here, especially in the Zona Romántica, where you’ll find hotels, resorts, bars, and nightclubs marketed specifically toward you—plus a gay beach on the main shore!
Resort Recommendation
Villa Premiere is a sexy adults-only resort with 80 luxurious rooms. Located in the heart of Old Town Puerto Vallarta, it boasts a stunning beach, delicious food, and pools for taking a dip whenever the mood strikes. You can select the all-inclusive package or the European Plan (breakfast only). Plus, they only book ONE wedding per week!
The Bottom Line
Same-sex marriage is legal in Mexico, and civil weddings there are recognized in the U.S. If you’d like to avoid legal hurdles, Puerto Vallarta is your best bet for an LGBTQ+ destination wedding!
