Tahiti, Bora Bora, Maldives –who doesn’t love these exotic destinations? But did you know that there are some distinct cultural differences between them all? Keep reading to find out more!
French polynesia
Ah, it can’t get much better than the French Polynesia! Within it, lies two famous islands: Bora Bora and Tahiti. The key differences here are that Bora Bora is a more intimate and luxurious location and Tahiti is the most urbanized island in the French Polynesia.
They both have lush green mountains and crystal-clear lagoons, making them the ultimate escape for romance and relaxation! In addition, both have a number of gorgeous resorts, cultural activities, and incredible sightseeing spots. You want overwater bungalows? Well, you’ll find them here…
Travel Time: 8 hour non-stop flight from Los Angeles (LAX)
Resorts: The islands are much larger in French Polynesia allowing you the time to explore the islands for adventure, but also island hop! You will find overwater villas on every island along with garden bungalows with private pools and bungalows right on the beach. There aren’t any adult only resorts, but don’t worry, you won’t find many kids.
Meal Plans: Most, if not, all include breakfast and offer half board meal plans (breakfast and dinner included). Sorry, there are no all inclusive resorts on these islands.
Average Budget: $10k – $15k

Maldives
In contrast to the French Polynesian islands, The Maldives is a uniquely gorgeous island country situated in the Arabian Sea. Not only is the scenery gorgeous and the weather perfect, but it offers travelers the cultural experience of a lifetime!
Here, you can enjoy unique activities – like dine in an underwater restaurant – or soak up the sun jet skiing, boating, snorkeling and more! If you’re looking for something truly magical, head over to the Vaadhoo Islands – where you’ll get to witness the bioluminescence that can only be seen in the waters surrounding the island at night!
Travel time: From Chicago it can take you 20+ hours in flight to get to Male, Maldives. Most people stop for a couple nights in Dubai to break it up!
Resorts: Almost all of the resorts are on their own private atoll (island) making you feel isolated. You will find a lot of overwater villas with private pools and adult only resort options.
Meal Plans: here you will find all inclusive plans in addition to breakfast only or half board options. The resorts with underwater restaurants charge extra and are not included in the all inclusive package. Be sure to read the fine print!
Average Budget: $8k – $10k
The Maldives can be much more affordable, but be sure to consider the travel time.
