All Inclusive Destination Wedding: The Ultimate Guide

Everything you need to know before booking your dream destination wedding

If you are dreaming of an all inclusive destination wedding, you have come to the right place. At first, the idea of getting married abroad can feel overwhelming. There are so many destinations, so many resorts, and so many decisions to make. Fortunately, an all inclusive destination wedding is actually one of the most streamlined and stress-free ways to celebrate your big day. When planned correctly, it gives you and your guests an unforgettable experience that goes far beyond a traditional wedding.

As a certified destination wedding specialist and founder of Bridie Travel, I have planned over 75 all inclusive destination weddings across Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Costa Rica, and throughout the Caribbean over the last 11 years. In this ultimate guide, I am sharing everything you need to know, from choosing the right destination and resort to understanding group contracts, budgeting, and why working with a specialist makes all the difference.

What Is an All Inclusive Destination Wedding?

An all inclusive destination wedding is exactly what it sounds like. You and your guests travel to a resort destination, where accommodations, food, drinks, and entertainment are all included in one price. Additionally, the resort provides wedding packages that cover your ceremony, reception, and often extra events like welcome parties and rehearsal dinners.

For couples, the appeal is clear. Instead of coordinating vendors, catering, and venues across multiple locations, everything is handled under one roof. Moreover, your guests get a full vacation experience rather than simply attending a wedding. For many couples, that shared experience with family and friends is what makes a destination wedding so special.

Top Destinations for an All Inclusive Destination Wedding

Choosing the right destination is one of the first and most important steps in planning your all inclusive destination wedding. Here are the most popular destinations I work with at Bridie Travel and what makes each one unique:

Mexico: The Most Popular Destination Wedding Choice

Mexico is by far the most popular destination for all inclusive destination weddings, and for good reason. It offers easy accessibility from most US cities, a wide range of resort options at every price point, and some of the most stunning wedding venues in the world. Specifically, the three most popular regions in Mexico for destination weddings are:

  • Riviera Maya: Home to lush jungle resorts, Caribbean turquoise water, and iconic properties like Hotel Xcaret Mexico and Unico 20 87. Ideal for couples who want dramatic natural beauty and a wide variety of venues. For example, Allison and Evan chose Unico 20 87 in the Riviera Maya for its exceptional gluten-free dining and stunning oceanfront venues.
  • Los Cabos: Known for dramatic desert landscapes, world-class golf, and breathtaking Pacific sunsets. Properties like Hard Rock Hotel Los Cabos and Grand Fiesta Americana Los Cabos offer stunning ocean-view venues. Nat and Pat celebrated their Hard Rock Los Cabos wedding with 60 guests and a stunning all-white sunset cruise welcome party.
  • Puerto Vallarta: A charming colonial city surrounded by lush mountains and the Bay of Banderas. Perfect for couples who want a more intimate, boutique feel with incredible food and culture. Check out Secrets Vallarta Bay as a solid adult only resort.

Dominican Republic Destination Wedding

The Dominican Republic is a fantastic choice for couples looking for value without sacrificing luxury. In particular, Punta Cana offers some of the most beautiful white sand beaches in the Caribbean, with large resort properties that can accommodate big wedding groups. Furthermore, flight options from the US are plentiful and affordable, making it easier for guests with varying budgets.

Jamaica Destination Wedding

Jamaica offers a vibrant, energetic atmosphere with warm hospitality, lush landscapes, and stunning oceanfront resorts. Consequently, it is a great choice for couples who want a lively, fun-filled wedding weekend with plenty of entertainment and activities for guests. Montego Bay and Negril are the most popular wedding regions on the island.

Costa Rica Destination Wedding

For couples who want something truly off the beaten path, Costa Rica is an extraordinary choice. Above all, it offers breathtaking natural beauty, from rainforest canopies to Pacific coastlines. It is ideal for adventurous couples and guests who love nature, wildlife, and outdoor activities alongside their wedding celebration.

Caribbean Islands Destination Wedding

The Caribbean offers an incredible variety of island options, from the turquoise waters of Aruba to the lush greenery of St. Lucia and the sophisticated charm of Barbados. Indeed, the Caribbean is perfect for couples who want that classic tropical island feel with crystal-clear water and white sand beaches.

How to Choose the Right Destination Wedding Resort

Choosing the right all inclusive wedding resort is one of the most important decisions you will make. Unfortunately, it is also one of the hardest to make from behind a computer screen. As a destination wedding specialist who has personally visited and stayed at the resorts I recommend, I can tell you that photos and reviews only tell part of the story.

Here are the key factors to consider when selecting your all inclusive destination wedding resort:

  • Guest count and group size: Some resorts are better suited for intimate weddings of 20 to 30 guests, while others can comfortably accommodate 100 or more.
  • Venue style: Do you want a beach ceremony, a jungle garden, a cliffside terrace, or an elegant ballroom? Different resorts specialize in different wedding aesthetics.
  • Adults-only vs family friendly: If you have children in your group, you need a family-friendly resort. If your group is all adults, an adults-only property often offers a more sophisticated atmosphere.
  • Food quality: Wedding catering is a major part of your guests’ experience. Always choose a resort known for exceptional food quality.
  • Dietary needs: Do any of your guests have dietary restrictions? For example, Unico 20 87 in the Riviera Maya is exceptional for gluten-free guests, with GF options at every restaurant, a dedicated buffet section, and the ability to arrange a custom gluten-free wedding cake with the chef.
  • Beach access: Not all resort beaches are created equal. In Los Cabos, for instance, most beaches are not swimmable due to Pacific currents. If swimming is important to your group, this is a critical factor.
  • Activities and entertainment: Consider what your guests will do during the days surrounding the wedding. Parks, excursions, golf, spa, nightlife, and entertainment all factor into the overall guest experience.

Understanding Wedding Packages and Room Contracts

One of the most misunderstood aspects of planning an all inclusive destination wedding is the room block contract. In fact, this is where many couples run into trouble when they try to plan without a travel agent. Here is what you need to know:

What Is a Room Block Contract?

When you plan a group destination wedding, the resort requires you to commit to a minimum number of rooms for your guests. As a result, you sign a room block contract that secures those rooms and often locks in a group rate. The wedding contract is typically signed separately, either before or in conjunction with the room block.

Specifically, room block rules vary significantly from resort to resort. For example, at Hotel Xcaret Mexico, the minimum room requirement depends on your wedding day: 11 rooms for a weekday wedding, 20 rooms for a Friday, and 25 rooms for a Saturday. Additionally, each room must be booked for a minimum of three nights. Understanding these details upfront is absolutely critical, and it is precisely why working with a destination wedding specialist is so important.

How Complimentary Rooms Work at All Inclusive Destination Weddings

One of the biggest benefits of an all inclusive destination wedding is the complimentary room system. When your guests book through your room block, you earn free rooms and credits based on the total number of rooms booked. Consequently, many couples end up receiving significant savings on their own accommodation costs.

At Bridie Travel, I notify couples of their complimentary rooms and refunds approximately 7 to 10 days before departure. Subsequently, those credits are refunded to your credit card shortly after you return home.

Disclaimer: most resorts offer this perk, but it is not guaranteed as it’s resort specific. The details will be outlined in your room contract.

Budgeting for Your All Inclusive Destination Wedding

One of the biggest myths about all inclusive destination weddings is that they are more expensive than traditional weddings. In reality, they can actually be more cost-effective when planned correctly. Here is how to think about budgeting:

  • Wedding package cost: Most resorts offer tiered wedding packages that include ceremony setup, flowers, cake, dinner, and more. Furthermore, the more rooms your guests book, the more complimentary upgrades you may receive.
  • Guest accommodation: All-inclusive pricing typically ranges from $800 to $1,600 per person depending on the resort, destination, and time of year. Group rates negotiated by a travel agent are often significantly lower than booking direct.
  • Outside vendors: Some couples choose to bring in outside photographers, hair and makeup artists, or florists. In some cases, resorts charge an outside vendor fee. Your specialist can advise you on which resorts are most flexible with outside vendors.
  • Excursions and extras: Welcome parties, sunset cruises, and group excursions are often the most memorable parts of the wedding weekend. For instance, both Nat and Pat and Allison and Evan chose private sunset boat experiences for their welcome parties, and both described them as the highlight of the entire trip.

Why You Need a Destination Wedding Specialist

At this point, you may be wondering: can I plan an all inclusive destination wedding on my own? Technically, yes. However, the question is whether you should. In short, the answer is no, and here is why:

  • Firsthand resort knowledge: A specialist who has personally visited and stayed at the resorts they recommend can tell you things that no website ever could. From the quality of the food to which room categories have the best views, firsthand experience is irreplaceable.
  • Group contract expertise: Room block contracts are complex and vary significantly between resorts. A specialist knows exactly how many rooms to hold, when to release them, and how to protect you financially.
  • Guest coordination: Managing travel for 40, 60, or 100 guests is a full-time job. Your specialist acts as the single point of contact for every guest, handling bookings, payments, questions, and last-minute changes.
  • Problem solving: When unexpected things happen, and they always do, your specialist is there to handle them. Whether it is a lost luggage situation like at Kalli and Evan’s Cabo wedding or last-minute travel curveballs like Nat and Pat experienced, having an expert in your corner makes all the difference.
  • Cost savings: Working with a destination wedding specialist is often more affordable than couples expect. In fact, travel services for you and your guests are complimentary at Bridie Travel. Group rates, complimentary rooms, and negotiated perks often result in significant savings compared to booking independently.
