As a travel specialist, I’m a big proponent of destination weddings. What could be better than jetting off to paradise to exchange your vows? Unfortunately, there are lots of destination wedding myths out there that create misconceptions or discourage couples from planning one. Today I’m here to debunk them so you can confidently start planning!
Destination Wedding Myths
The Wedding Couple Gets the Best Room
I wish I could tell you that a resort will hold the best room with the best view for you and your spouse, but unfortunately, it isn’t realistic. The best rooms come with a hefty price tag! If the resort offers an upgrade, you can take it if you’d like—but you shouldn’t count on one. Room upgrades can’t be guaranteed because they’re entirely based on availability.
Resorts always sell their highest room categories with the best views first. So, unless you’ve booked well in advance, you shouldn’t bank on receiving one of those rooms.
More Guests Equals Freebies
Some couples assume that bringing more guests to the resort means they’re entitled to complimentary rooms or events not included in their contract. In most cases, this isn’t true. Any events you’d like to host apart from what’s included in your wedding package will cost you. The resort may offer a discount, but they’ll never gift you a free event. They need to compensate their staff who will be on-site during the event.
Wedding Packages Are Negotiable
Oh, how I wish this were true! The truth is that 99% of resorts won’t allow you to swap or make additions/subtractions to the items in your wedding package. Packages are pre-set deals, so if you must change something, it’ll cost you. However, one of my favorite resorts, Casa de Campo, does allow customization! Check out our blog explaining how their Ultimate Promise Package works.
Group Rates Cost Less Than Standard Rates
Again, I wish this were true! The reality is that group rates almost always equal standard rates once you do the math.
Destination Weddings Are Cheaper than Domestic Weddings
This destination wedding myth is rooted in the truth—planning a destination wedding is often cheaper than planning a wedding at home! However, this isn’t true across the board. The more you spend on enhancements to your florals and decor and vendors like a photographer and videographer, the less you can expect to save.
Sticking to the basics is the best way to keep your destination wedding budget-friendly! Most of my couples choose to let their destination speak for itself, which helps them save on flowers and decor. Remember: the stunning ocean backdrop at your ceremony venue is 100% free!
Nobody Will Come
Um, yes, they will! Since 2020 (no, I’m going to say the dreaded word), people have been traveling like never before. Everyone’s anxious to escape their everyday surroundings and explore somewhere new! Rather than an inconvenience, your destination wedding is an opportunity for your loved ones to enjoy an incredible getaway with all their family and friends. What could be better? I’ve even observed my couples hosting more guests than they initially planned.
Destination Weddings Are Difficult to Plan
When you hire a destination wedding travel specialist (like me!), this couldn’t be further from the truth. I guide my couples every step of the way to plan the once-in-a-lifetime escape of their dreams. Here’s how I do it!
