7 Tips for Safer Travel

In light of recent events that took place at the Fort Lauderdale airport, and our new reality, I thought I’d share some tips for traveling safe. It’s easy to get lost in the excitement of traveling to a tropical paradise, but wait to get lost until you arrive at the resort. My husband is professionally trained in anti-terrorism so here are his travel safety tips to keep top of mind while traveling.

1. Be aware of your surroundings

Know your exits and look for places to take cover. In regards to an active shooter, know what will stop a bullet (i.e., concrete pillars in airports).

2. Wear a belt

It has multiple uses in case of an emergency, such as, fastening things to it, an extra carry handle in case you need to carry someone out or move something heavy and for many other reasons.

3. Sit in an aisle seat

In case of evacuation you don’t have to climb over other people in case someone gets hurt.

4. Watch for body language

People set on committing violence will have a tendency to exhibit similar characteristics. (i.e. thousand-yard stare – focused stare, oddly sweating, walking robotically)

5. Wear gym shoes

If you need to evacuate the plane or run you can without having to worry about losing your shoes. I know it’s hard not to wear your flip flops when going somewhere tropical, but put them in your carry on and change your shoes when you land.

6. Pack a flashlight in your carry on

Bring a flashlight that use 123A batteries because they are extra bright. Be sure to carry extra batteries in your bag. If you’re in an unfamiliar place in the dark you can see around you and can also use it to signal for help.

7. Emergency Contact

Especially when traveling internationally, always tell a family member or friend your flight and hotel information. Then contact them when you get to your hotel so they know you’re safe.

You may be thinking some of these are over the top, but they really aren’t. You never know what could happen anywhere! If you feel something isn’t right tell someone!!

Please be safe EVERY TIME you travel.
